What is a ‘Bill Murray Story’?

A classic “Bill Murray Story” is a tale, told in the first person, that starts out sounding believable enough – before suddenly taking a bizarre turn that involves actor Bill Murray doing something ridiculous. Typically these stories end with Bill saying “No one will ever believe you“, or something to that effect.

Are Bill Murray stories true?

The stories are sometimes fictional, but certainly not always. Some have actually happened. It is difficult to estimate what portion of them contain any truth, but that kind of adds to the allure, no? Deciding which ones you think are/aren’t true is half the fun.

I think we can all agree that Bill Murray does indeed do some hilarious, odd, kind, interesting, or otherwise surprising things – often after showing up unexpectedly. This was not the first (and is far from the only) site to document this.

It’s been almost four years and this whole project still seems crazy to me. But people seem to like it and, as long as that’s the case, I’ll continue to enjoy posting their stories… the true ones, the made up ones, and the ones that are actually true (even if nobody would ever believe them).

Why?

After first hearing about a few “Bill Murray Story” urban legends through some friends, I immediately realized it’s a fun way to tell a story. For a while, it was kind of a running joke among some people I know to try and tell an entire Bill Murray story – without someone calling you on it before you reveal the ending.

A big reason for this site, though, is that he is one of my favorite actors of all time and seems like a genuinely cool and down to earth person. On one hand, he’s this renowned actor and entertainer that is known and loved across the world. At the same time, he doesn’t come off as taking himself too seriously and seems gracious with his fans.

Although I have nothing to base this on aside from what I’ve read and seen in interviews, I get the impression Bill Murray brings a sense of excitement to the projects he works on, which, in turn, brings out the best in those around him.

Can I write a story?
